Master Atisha was born in Bangladesh as a prince. He was endowed with many exceptional and interesting dispositions and unsurpassed wisdom. At the age of 3, he had mastered arithmetic and languages. At the age of 6, he attained a profound understanding of the Dharma. By the age of 20, he was highly proficient in the Dharma, music, poetry, literature, medicine, the arts, debate, logic, and all forms of knowledge. He became a highly accomplished scholar.
At the age of 11, after travelling to Nalanda Buddhist University in India to visit the great masters, wherever a great master resided, Master Astisha would travel there to learn from him. He travelled overseas three times to seek teachers and learn the teachings. He even travelled to Indonesia and learned from Master Serlingba for 12 years.
After more than 10 years of diligent learning and practice, and having followed 153 great masters, his learning was akin to filling water from one water bottle to another. He attained all the Mahayana, Hinayana, Tantra and Mantra lineage teachings, becoming India’s most well-versed and influential guiding Master among all different sects, and an authority on all schools of thought.
In his old age, he arrived to Tibet to assist to revive and propagate Buddhism, henceforth, making outstanding contributions to the development of Buddhism in China.
