The Flower Adornment Sutra： Purification Practices

赞佛相好，当愿众生：

Zàn fú xiānghǎo, dāng yuàn zhòngshēng:

Praising the Buddha’s distinguished marks,
They should wish that all beings

成就佛身，证无相法。

Chéngjiù fú shēn, zhèng wū xiāng fǎ.

Develop the Buddha-body And realize formless truth.

菩萨在家，Bodhisattvas at home
当愿众生：Should wish that all beings
知家性空，Realise the nature of “home” is emptiness
免其逼迫。And escape its pressures.

孝事父母，While serving their parents,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
善事于佛，Serve the Buddha well,
护养一切。Protecting and nourishing everyone.
003
妻子集会，While with their spouses and children,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
怨亲平等，Be impartial towards everyone
永离贪着。And forever give up attachment.

若得五欲，If inflicted with five desires,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
拔除欲箭，Pull out the arrow of lust
究竟安隐。And realise ultimate peace.

伎乐聚会，On festive occasions
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
以法自娱，Enjoy themselves with dharma
了伎非实。And realise amusement’s not real.

若在宫室，If in palace rooms,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
入于圣地，Enter the sanctified state,
永除秽欲。Forever rid of defiled craving.

着璎珞时，When putting on adornments,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
舍诸伪饰，Give up phony decoration
到真实处。And reach the abode of truth.

上升楼阁，When climbing up in balconies,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
升正法楼，Ascend the tower of truth
澈见一切。And see through everything.

若有所施，If they give something,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
一切能舍，Be able to relinquish all
心无爱着。With hearts free of clinging.

众会聚集，When in gatherings or crowds,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
舍众聚法，Let go of compounded things
成一切智。And attain to total knowledge.

若在厄难，If in danger and difficulty,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
随意自在，Be free at will,
所行无碍。Unhindered wherever they go.

舍居家时，When they give up secular life,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
出家无碍，Have no hindrance to be a renunciate,
心得解脱。And that their minds be liberated.

入僧伽蓝，Entering a sangha community,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
演说种种， Expound various principles
无乖诤法。Of noncontention.

诣大小师，Going to tutors and teachers,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
巧事师长，Skilfully serve their teachers
习行善法。And practice virtuous ways.

求请出家，Seeking ordination,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
得不退法， Reach the nonregressing state,
心无障碍。 Their minds without impediment

脱去俗服，Shedding lay clothing,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
勤修善根，Cultivate roots of virtues
舍诸罪轭。And abandon the yoke of transgressions.

剃除须发，When shaving off their hair,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
永离烦恼，Forever divorce all afflictions
究竟寂灭。And reach nirvana.

着袈裟衣，Putting on religious garb,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
心无所染，Be undefiled in mind
具大仙道。And fulfil the Way of the Great Sage.

正出家时，When they are formally ordained,
当愿众生： They should wish that all beings
同佛出家， Be renunciated with the Buddha
救护一切。And rescue one and all.

自归于佛，Taken refuge in the Buddha,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
绍隆佛种，Continue the lineage of Buddhas,
发无上意。Conceiving the unexcelled aspiration.

自归于法，Taken refuge in the Teachings,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
深入经藏，Engage profoundly in the scriptures
智能如海。And their wisdom be deep as the sea.

自归于僧，Taken refuge in the Community,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
统理大众，Gather and lead the masses,
一切无碍。All are free from obstruction.

受学戒时，When receiving and learning precepts,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
善学于戒，Learn ethnical discipline well
不作众恶。And not do any non-virtuous act.
024
受阇梨教，Receiving a master’s instruction,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
具足威仪，Bear themselves with dignity
所行真实。And that their actions be truthful.
025
受和尚教，Receiving an abbot’s guidance,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
入无生智，Enter the knowledge of birthlessness
到无依处。And reach the realm of nonreliance.
026
受具足戒，Receiving the full set of precepts,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
具诸方便，Fulfill all means of liberation
得最胜法。And master the supreme teaching.
027
若入堂宇，When entering a hall,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
升无上堂，Ascend to the unexcelled sanctuary
安住不动。And rest there secure, unshakable.
028
若敷床座，When setting out a seat,
当愿众生： They should wish that all beings
开敷善法，Grow and groom virtuous acts
见真实相。And see their true character.

正身端坐，Sitting up straight,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
坐菩提座，Sit on the throne of enlightenment,
心无所着。Their minds without attachment.

结跏趺坐，Sitting cross-legged,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
善根坚固，Have firm and strong roots of virtues
得不动地。And attain the state of immovability.

修行于定，Cultivating concentration,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
以定伏心，Subdue their minds by concentration
究竟无余。Ultimately, with no remainder.

若修于观，If practicing insight,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
见如实理，Sec truth as it is
永无乖诤。And be forever free of opposition and contention.

舍跏趺坐，When uncrossing the legs,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
观诸行法，Observe that all acts and phenomena
悉归散灭。Return to dispersal and extinction.

下足住时，When lowering the feet and resting,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
心得解脱，Attain liberation of mind,
安住不动。Resting at peace, unstirred.

若举于足，When raising the legs,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
出生死海，Leave the sea of birth and death
具众善法。And fulfil all good qualities.

着下裙时，When putting on lower garments,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
服诸善根，Wear the foundations of goodness
具足惭愧。And have a sense of shame and conscience.

整衣束带，When putting on a belt,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
检束善根，Restrain themselves and observe virtues
不令散失。And not let them be lost.

若着上衣，When putting on an outer garment,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
获胜善根，Attain sublime virtues
至法彼岸。And reach the Other Shore of the Teachings.

着僧伽梨，Putting on monastic robes,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
入第一位，Enter the foremost rank
得不动法。And attain imperturbability.

手执杨枝，Taking a toothstick in hand,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
皆得妙法，Attain the wonderful teaching
究竟清净。And be ultimately pure and pristine.

嚼杨枝时，When chewing on the toothstick,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
其心调净， Be pacified and pure in mind,
噬诸烦恼。Biting through all afflictions.

大小便时，When going to the toilet,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
弃贪瞋痴，Reject greed, anger, and ignorance,
蠲除罪法。And clean away sinful things.

事讫就水，When going to wash thereafter,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
出世法中，Speedily go
速疾而往。To the transmundane.

洗涤形秽，When washing off the body’s filth,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
清净调柔，Be pure and harmonious
毕竟无垢。And ultimately without defilement.

以水盥掌，When washing the hands with water,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
得清净手，Have pure clean hands
受持佛法。To receive and uphold Buddha’s teaching.

以水洗面，When washing the face with water,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
得净法门，Attain the pure teachings
永无垢染。And be forever free from defilement.
047
手执锡杖，Picking up a staff,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
设大施会，Establish great works of generosity
示如实道。And point out the true path.

执持应器，Taking up a bowl,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
成就法器，Become a perfect dharma vessel
受天人供。And receive celestials and humans offerings.

发趾向道，Setting out on the path,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
趣佛所行，Heading the Buddha’s way,
入无依处。Into the realm of nonreliance.

若在于道，When on the path,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
能行佛道，Would tread towards buddhahood,
向无余法。And not on other paths of cultivation.

涉路而去，When on the road,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
履净法界，Tread the pure realm of reality,
心无障碍。Their minds without obstruction.

见升高路，Seeing a road uphill,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
永出三界，Forever liberated from the 3 worlds,
心无怯弱。Their minds free from weakness.

见趣下路，Seeing a road downhill,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
其心谦下，Be humble in mind
长佛善根。And develop virtues of enlightenment.

见斜曲路，Seeing a winding road,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
舍不正道，Abandon false paths
永除恶见。And forever purge wrong views.

若见直路，Seeing a straight road,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
其心正直，Be straight and true in mind,
无谄无诳。Without flattery and deceit.

见路多尘，Seeing a dusty road,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
远离尘坌，Get rid of dust and dirt
获清净法。And attain the state of purity.

见路无尘，Seeing a dust-free road,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
常行大悲，Always practice great compassion,
其心润泽。Their hearts refreshing and nourishing.

若见险道，Seeing a dangerous road,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
住正法界， Abide in the realm of truth
离诸罪难。And avoid the troubles of wrongdoing.

若见众会，Seeing a group of people,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
说甚深法，Expound the most profound teaching,
一切和合。That all be harmoniously united.

若见大柱，If they see a big tree,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
离我诤心，Divorce egotistic contentiousness
无有忿恨。And be free of anger and resentment.

若见丛林，If they see a grove,
当愿众生：The should wish that all beings
诸天及人，Be worthy of the respect
所应敬礼。 Of heavenly and humans.

若见高山，If they see high mountains,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings’
善根超出，Virtuous roots stand out,
无能至顶。Their peak beyond anyone’s reach.

见棘刺树，If they see thorny trees,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
疾得翦除，May quickly cut away
三毒之刺。The thorns of the three poisons.

见树叶茂，Seeing trees with luxuriant foliage,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
以定解脱，Shade themselves
而为荫映。With concentration and liberation.

若见华开，If they see flowers blooming,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings’
神通等法，Mystic spiritual powers
如华开敷。Be like blossoming flowers.

若见树华，If they see blossoms on trees,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings’
众相如华，Features be like flowers,
具三十二。With distinct 32 signs.

若见果实，If they see fruits,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
获最胜法，Attain the sublime teachings
证菩提道。And realised the path towards enlightenment.

若见大河，If they see a big river,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
得预法流，Attain the stream of truth
入佛智海。And enter the ocean of omniscience.

若见陂泽，If they see a reservoir,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
疾悟诸佛，Quickly awaken to
一味之法。The truth of the oneness of the Buddhas.

若见池沼，If they see a pond,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
语业满足，Be fully accomplished in speech
巧能演说。And be skilful in preaching.

若见汲井，If they see a well,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
具足辩才，Have full powers of elucidation
演一切法。To explain all phenomena.

若见涌泉，If they see a spring,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings’
方便增长，Increases their methods
善根无尽。And virtues be inexhaustible.

若见桥道，If they see a bridge,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
广度一切，Carry all across to liberation
犹如桥梁。 Like a bridge.

若见流水，If they see flowing water,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
得善意欲，Develop wholesome aspiration
洗除惑垢。 And wash away the stains of delusion.

见修园圃，Seeing a garden cultivated
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
五欲圃中， In the garden of five desires
耘除爱草。Clear away the weeds of craving.

见无忧林，Seeing a forest of “sorrowless” trees
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
永离贪爱，Forever divorce greed and lust
不生忧怖。And not produce anxiety and fear.

若见园苑，If they see a park,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
勤修诸行，Diligently cultivate the practices
趣佛菩提。Leading to Buddhas’ enlightenment.

见严饰人，Seeing people wearing ornaments
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
三十二相，Be adorned with a
以为严好。Buddha’s dignified thirty-two signs.

见无严饰，Seeing the unadorned
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
舍诸饰好，Give up decorations
具头陀行。And practice austerity.

见乐着人，Seeing people attached to pleasure
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
以法自娱，Delight themselves with truth,
欢爱不舍。Not abandoning love for it.

见无乐着，Seeing the unattached
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
有为事中，Have no fondness in their minds
心无所乐。For composite things.

常得安乐，Always be peaceful and happy,
乐供养佛。 Fondly making offerings to the Buddhas.

见苦恼人，Seeing people suffer
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
获根本智，Attain wisdom that differentiates true nature
灭除众苦。And eliminate all sufferings.

见无病人，Seeing people with no maladies
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
入真实慧，Attain wisdom that comprehends reality
永无病恼。And never have sickness or afflictions.

见疾病人，Seeing people sick
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
知身空寂，Know the body is empty and null
离乖诤法。And divorce opposition and conflict.

见端正人，Seeing handsome people
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
于佛菩萨，Always have pure faith
常生净信。In the Bodhisattvas and Buddhas.

见丑陋人，Seeing ugly people
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
于不善事，Not become attached
不生乐着。To non virtuous acts.

见报恩人，Seeing grateful people
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
于佛菩萨，Be able to know the kindess and merits
能知恩德。Of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.

见背恩人，Seeing ungrateful people
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
于有恶人，Not increase the punishment
不加其报。Of those who are evil.

若见沙门，If they see mendicants,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
调柔寂静，Be harmonious and tranquil,
毕竟第一。Ultimately conquering themselves.

永持梵行，Always maintain pure conduct,
离一切恶。Be rid of all evil.

常服善铠，Always wear the armour of virtue,
趣无师法。Heading for the teacher-less state.

不善之业。Doings that are non-virtuous.

见论议人，Seeing people debate
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
于诸异论，Be able to refute
悉能摧伏。All erroneous doctrines.

见正命人，Seeing people of proper livelihood
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
得清净命，Succeed in pure livelihood
不矫威仪。Without improper behaviour.

当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
得为法王，Become kings of truth,
恒转正法。Always expounding the right teaching.

当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
从法化生，Be reborn from the truth
而为佛子。And be children of Buddha.

善能明断，Be able to clearly cut off
不行恶法。And not practice evil ways.

若见大臣，If they see a great minister,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
恒守正念，Always maintain right mindfulness
习行众善。And practice all virtues.

若见城廓，If they see a castle,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
得坚固身，Gain strong and firm bodies
心无所屈。And indefatigable minds.

若见王都，If they see a capital,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
功德共聚，Gather and collect all virtues
心恒喜乐。And always be joyful and blissful.

见处林薮，Seeing someone in a forest,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
应为天人，Be worthy of praise and honor
之所叹仰。Of celestials and humans

入里乞食，Entering a village to beg,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
入深法界，Enter the profound realm of truth,
心无障碍。Their minds without impediment.

到人门户，Coming to someone’s door,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
入于一切，Enter into all
佛法之门。Doors of Buddha’s teaching.

入其家已，Having entered a house,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
得入佛乘，Would enter the vehicle of buddhahood
三世平等。Which is equal in all times.

见不舍人，Seeing someone who doesn’t give
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
常不舍离，Never ever give up
胜功德法。Supreme virtuous ways.

见能舍人，Seeing those who give
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
永得舍离，Forever abandon
三恶道苦。The three miserable realms and their sufferings.

若见空钵，If they see an empty bowl,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
其心清净，Be pure of heart
空无烦恼。And empty of afflictions.

若见满钵，If they see a full bowl,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
具足成满，Completely fulfill
一切善法。All virtuous ways.

若得恭敬，If they receive respect,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
恭敬修行，Respectfully practice
一切佛法。All the Buddha’s teachings.

不得恭敬，If they get no respect,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
不行一切，Not act in any ways
不善之法。That are not virtuous.

见惭耻人，Seeing people with conscience
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
具惭耻行，Act with discretion
藏护诸根。And restrain their faculties.

见无惭耻，Seeing the shameless
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
舍离无惭，Give up shamelessness
住大慈道。And abide in the path of great kindness.

若得美食，If they get fine food
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
满足其愿，Should fulfill their aspirations
心无羡欲。And be free from envy and longing.

得不美食，If they get poor food

莫不获得，Should not fail to obtain
诸三昧味 the taste of all samadhi.

大悲所熏，Be imbued with great compassion
心意柔软。Their minds becoming gentle.

绝世贪爱。And cut off mundane craving.

禅悦为食，Feed on the joy of meditation
法喜充满。And be sated by delight in truth.

若受味时，When tasting flavour,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
得佛上味，Attain the supreme savour of Buddhahood
甘露满足。And be filled with with the dew elixir.

饭食已讫，When the meal is finished
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
所作皆办，Accomplish all their tasks
具诸佛法。In concordance with the Buddha’s teachings.

若说法时，When they explain the teaching
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
得无尽辩，Attain inexhaustible eloquence
广宣法要。And extensively expound the essentials of the Teachings.

从舍出时，When they leave a place
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
深入佛智，Attain profound Buddha’s knowledge
永出三界。 Forever leaving the three worlds.

若入水时，When they enter a bath
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
入一切智，Attain omniscient knowledge
知三世等。Knowing past, present, and future are equal

洗浴身体，While washing their bodies
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
身心无垢，Be undefiled in body and mind
内外光洁。Radiantly pure inside and out.

盛暑炎毒，In the blistering summer heat
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
舍离众恼，Cast off myriad afflictions,
一切皆尽。 And extinguish all of them.

暑退凉初，When the summer heat subsides and begins to cool,
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
证无上法，Attain unsurpassable truth
究竟清凉。And be ultimately cool.

讽诵经时，When reciting scripture,

顺佛所说，Accord with the Buddha’s teachings,
总持不忘。Remembering without forgetting.

得无碍眼，Attain unobstructed eye sight
见一切佛。To see all Buddhas.

谛观佛时，When attentively observing the Buddha,

皆如普贤，All be like Samantabhadra,
端正严好。Glorious and dignified.

尊重如塔，Honour it as Buddha’s relic
受天人供。And receive the offerings of celestials and humans.

敬心观塔，Reverently gazing at the shrine

诸天及人，Be looked up to with esteem by all
所共瞻仰。Celestials and humans.

顶礼于塔，Bowing their heads to the shrine,

一切天人，Be exalted beyond the view
无能见顶。Of celestials and humans.

右遶于塔，Circumambulating the shrine
当愿众生：They should wish that all beings
所行无逆，Act without offense
成一切智。And develop omniscience.

遶塔三匝，Circumambulating the shrine thrice,

勤求佛道，Diligently pursue the path towards Buddhahood
心无懈歇。Without indolence of mind.

赞佛功德，Praising the Buddha’s virtues,

众德悉具，Fulfill all virtues
称叹无尽 And extolled endlessly.
