One of the highlights which I look forward to during Sunday Auspicious Puja (the English as well as the Mandarin session) is the weekly short sharing by the Lecturers.
It gives me much comfort to know that on this path of being a buddhist, aspiring to be diligent in applying Buddha’s Dharma, that I have the companionship of these virtuous practitioners who have been through challenges and overcome them with the teachings of Buddha by their side!
During the English session, Lecturer Soen shared that she, like many of us, had her fair share of “warfare” with those around her. Where we “Declare War”! I am sure, you can relate?
I know I could!
In fact, it happened recently to me too… had this sour aching feeling in my heart and motion sickness feeling in my tummy after some unhappy interaction… don’t even want to say the word “argument”…
Rings a bell?
WE ARE SAME SAME!
How then did Lecturer Soen become DIFFERENT with the help of virtuous advice and guidance from the Triple Gem?
Yes, she took refuge in the Buddha and sought advice! With much reflection and thought sorting…she came to this next step…
Often we are only upset with the person who “set the fire” or made us declare war. Being not or less angry is already so difficult. So how can we even look at their “good side”? Does it even exist? What do our fury eyes see?
But then again, if we do not do so, the “fire” or “war” may not be burning just the other party but burning our very own hearts and our own flesh… more so if the person is someone whom we would need to continue interacting with or whom we treasure dearly!
Life according to Buddha is not a sprint…it is a marathon of infinite lives…if we let go of our self-centred perspectives, put ourselves in others’ shoes and maintain good relationships, when conditions are favourable…if our motivation is pure…things will go our way! You have to try it for yourself!
Thanks, Lecturer Soen for the REAL food for thought!
For the Mandarin session, Lecturer Qing Hai shared about how a small gesture in a change of behaviour after an awakening incident can change our lives and those around us!
Some things in life we take for granted…being able to wake up, having good health, being able to have food on the table, living in a peaceful country… and so much more!
However, when one of these are threatened to be taken away from us… we realised its existence and importance… we then become more compassionate of the beings who like us, may lose what they took for granted in life.
Being able to treasure our health when the red light has lighted up and turning to be more compassionate towards all beings, regardless of big, small or those fighting for survival is a still a beautiful spiritual awakening for a friend/classmate of Lecturer Qing Hai.
By this small change of compassionate mindset and attitude towards all living beings, this friend did influence her family to be more socially aware that little insects who were also fighting to stay alive.
May this friend and her family be in good health and may all beings treasure life in every way!
