I must say Buddhism has its charm. It is very practical. I hope you agree with me and feel it is worth everyone’s exploration.

It addresses the issue of our afflictions and suffering. By nature, all humans seek happiness and run far away from suffering.

May I know if you want happiness?

Do you have any suffering at all in life?

Are you looking for a solution? A strategy?

Often our anger is one signal that we are engulfed in suffering.

Now think about a most recent issue or incident that made you angry.

What and who caused you to be angry?

1. Has it happened to you many times?

2. Are you often moved by your emotions?

3. Are you dragged by the nose by your emotions?

Sadly answer to the last 3 questions: YES… sadly.

The turbulence of our emotions may be like the rise and fall of share prices in the stock market? If you know a little about share prices, they are affected by market forces, likewise our turbulent emotions would be driven by our views and opinions.

Several more questions for you to ponder:

Would you agree that your emotions are often influenced your views and opinions?

Do you also agree that our attitude and perspective towards a similar issue can bring some people happiness and others suffering?

Think of a situation which can have one person almost exploding with anger but brings simply joy to another?

One possible case is that of “rain”.

One may hate the rain as it may wet and damage the new and expensive shoes or bags they bought and treasure. Some taxi drivers hate it as it gets dangerous to drive on the road! Who will be happy with the arrival of rain?

The umbrella seller and those who wants to take a nap and the rain would make it wonderful!

Contemplate if the attitude you choose determines your receiving outcome of happiness or suffering? It does, right?

There is a huge gap between these two resultant experiences. But YOU are the determining factor.

The adoption of a pessimistic attitude is based on your personal views. Thus, you are likely the source of your own suffering and your happiness.

Fear not, there is a solution! In Chinese, it is: 有法可依, 有章可寻!

YES! There is structured step- by-step approach which our teacher advocates.

STEP 1:

ALWAYS CHOOSE HAPPINESS!

When the next affliction or turbulence occurs, ask yourself which would you choose? Happiness or suffering?

Remember that your choice determines the end result.

However, that is not easy to do this. It takes time and practice.

Just remember this is definitely a worthwhile investment if the afflictions and suffering are affecting your lifestyle or your relationship with your loved ones.

STEP 2:

OBSERVE & TAKE NOTE!

People can be categorized in many ways.

One possible way of categorizing people when they face adversities is as follows:

1. Those who blame others.

2. Those who reflect upon themselves. Are they also responsible in any way for the adversity?

3.Observe yourself when you face adversity or at least do a post-reflection.

Look out for the following:

  • body language, facial expression, duration, does it affect your lifestyle
  • your breathing, the intensity, what caused the unhappiness
  • your eye contact with others.

STEP 3

WORK FROM WITHIN YOURSELF

Seek to adjust yourself from the heart. Instead of being dragged by your emotions.

If we work on it and practice time and again, we will be able to control our afflictions and gain more happiness while reducing suffering.

It is how we look at the issue versus the actual nature of the issue.

May we all become happier people day by day, month by month until we all achieve ultimate happiness!

Take that first step towards happiness! GO FOR IT!

GO FOR IT!
